Discover Uganda’s largest and most iconic protected area
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest and one of its most iconic protected areas. Located in northwestern Uganda, it spans approximately 3,893 square kilometers across the districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Kiryandongo, and Masindi. The park sits along the shores of Lake Albert and is bisected by the mighty Victoria Nile, which flows through the park and dramatically plunges through a narrow gorge to form the spectacular Murchison Falls.
The park is a top destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers, offering a rich mosaic of savannahs, woodlands, riverine forests, and diverse ecosystems teeming with wildlife.
Murchison Falls National Park is located about 305 kilometers northwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital. It can be accessed by road or by air via nearby airstrips. Many tour operators offer transportation and guided trips to the park.
Sir Samuel Baker and Florence Baker were the first Europeans to officially sight the falls in the 19th century. Baker named the falls after Roderick Murchison, then president of the Royal Geographical Society. The falls have since lent their name to the national park that surrounds them.
