Kidepo Valley National Park

📍 Location

Located in the northeastern corner of Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park is a pristine wilderness area rich in ancient cultures. It presents a vibrant tapestry of traditional communities awaiting exploration. Situated approximately 220 kilometres northwest of Moroto, the park spans the Karamoja Region, covering a total land area of 1,442 square kilometres, which is sufficiently expansive to support a variety of tourist activities.

🚗 Getting There

Accessible by road: The park can be reached from Kampala via Gulu and Kitgum (approx. 571 km), or from Kampala via Karuma, Gulu, Kitgum, and Kidepo, the shortest and most commonly used route.
By air: Scheduled flights from Entebbe to Kidepo are available, operated by tour companies and Kidepo guides.

🎒 Activities at the Park

All activities in Kidepo National Park start with a briefing for tourists at the park headquarters, explaining rules, regulations, and expectations. After the briefing, tourists receive security measures, including a knowledgeable tour guide and a well-armed tour officer for protection.

• 1. Cultural Tours
  The ancient, unspoiled cultures of Kidepo showcase a fascinating world of the Karamajongs and the IKS, who have lived on their land for centuries, maintaining their unique customs and lifestyle.
  Explore the heart of Kidepo and be captivated by the vibrant colours and intricate patterns of traditional attire, featuring bright red and blue beads and feathered headdresses.
  Visitors can engage with locals, gaining a deeper understanding of their traditional practices, dances, history, and customs.
  Experience ancient beadwork, basket weaving, and survival strategies during cattle wrestling. Enjoy traditional dances and the haunting melodies of the Adungu.
  As the sun sets, gather around the fire and listen to elders share tales of ancestors and myths of the land, fostering connections and experiencing the warmth of local hospitality.
• 2. Nature Walks and Hikes
  Kidepo offers excellent trails for observing and appreciating its natural environment. Nature walks are available year-round, especially recommended in the dry season (Nov-Feb).
  Visit Kanangorok Hot Springs, Apoka Tourism Centre, Norus, Kidepo River, Mountain Morungole, and more.
  Walks are best in the morning and evening. Spot a variety of mammals: lions, leopards, giraffes, Uganda kobs, maneless zebras, Bohor reed bucks, Gunther’s dik dik, and more.
  Enjoy over 470 bird species, including Abyssinian roller, purple heron, Chappertons, Francolin, and migratory birds.
  Hike and birdwatch in Lomej hills, Morungole Mountains, Narus valley, Apoka rest camp, and Enkakine Circuit. These areas offer great views, landscape exploration, and opportunities to see giraffes, buffalos, elephants, and lions.
• 3. Birding
  Kidepo is home to a wide variety of unique and endemic bird species, making it an excellent place to spot birds of prey.
  Birding mainly occurs around Apoka Rest Camp, exploring dry stream beds and tracks hosting specific species like Chappertons Francolin (found only in Kidepo) and Karamoja Apolis (endemic to Uganda).
  Birding in Kidepo is a must for any adventure seeker.
